I usually try to ignore my discomfort when my hands are taken over by bad skin, swelling, splitting... I mean, of course I try to treat the problem, but I don't like having to just sit still and be careful to touch nothing while all my fingers throb with pain... AGAIN.
So, I've usually found it workable to do what I call my "mindless" crochet, the crocheting I can manage to do even when I'm exhausted, or when my hands are at their worst. With big, soft chenille blanket yarn, I work in repetitive, easy rounds of mesh made with chain stitches (and a few other stitches). I wear finger shields or gloves if I need to. I make huge, strong (but soft) laundry bags, shopping bags, pajama bags...bags! I really like them. And they have drawn a lot of favorable comments when I use them at grocery stores or wherever.
Lately, though, I haven't even wanted to pick up the big soft blanket yarn. This will pass... I'll catch up... my hands will get better.
In part, my reluctance to sit and do the happy "dumb crochet" could be that I recently became clearly aware that I'd quit doing the more artistic, sculptural type of things that I used to try. I got very used to my safe space. Here and there over the past few days, though, I have been working on a doll that requires some artistic design and decisions... posted about that one a couple days ago. That's been fun.
Anyway, I'll keep being both mindless and mindful, either one or the other, depending on what the situation calls for. Ha ha ha! 😂
